I'm sorry, but I felt the game was underwhelming. The issue with VP is annoying. After finishing mission 1, in 3,4,5 turns, tracking them is pointless. Maybe they can be one's score, but there is little strategy to how one gets more, it'll be mostly random, no?
After getting the Chempill - again, really early on - there's no more reason to ever rest at base, no? One can walk back and forth and get more boons that way.
Mission 3 boils down to: walk in a circle, repeatedly if you're unlucky, and hope to roll a 4 (and hope not to roll a 2) (1/12 chance); if one has more time and wishes to be safe, walk in a bigger circle and hope to roll a 12 (1/36).
Getting the scanner after M4, sounds great... trivializes the game's risks further though, for what benefit?
I'm sorry if perhaps I'm severly misunderstanding the rules?
Well, not every game is for everyone, and that is OK.
Critically, the Chempill only prevents health loss due to movement in the Chemzone. Trooper still loses [H] in the Radwastes (until the Radsuit is obtained) and the Outlands, and for any Encounters in any terrsin type. So returning to Base is still advisable when [H] is low, or to clear hexes if they have been marked, and mission objectives in those zones not yet reached.
Trooper cannot just patrol in circles, as the hexes will be marked on the first lap and he won't have any Encounters when overlapping them, so can't get the objectives unless he finds the first time. He needs to return to base to erase those hexes. Hope that makes sense!
VPs are totally intended as a score, and rather than just being random, are about pushing luck against risk of death, and hopefully beating your personal best provides some entertainment.
Hope those notes help to clarify the rules a little and help you get more enjoyment from the game.
Got a free copy of this during the 1pg RPG jam. Zone Trooper is a minimalist sci-fi game. Survival is the main issue the Zone Trooper contends with as they explore the chem-ridden wastelands, hoping to finish their mission before their health or their grenades run out. At least, that's what I felt during the game. Everything plays pretty quickly, and I liked Mission 6 a lot. My only caveat is that for people with bad eyesight, you might want to print this at a slightly larger scale or with reduced margins. I printed this as is on A4 and both the body and header text were hard to read. People with dexterity issues may also have trouble moving the little player marker that you cut out before you start the game. Overall, one of my favorite entries for the jam, gameplay- and aesthetics-wise.
Thanks for the feedback.
Yes Zone Trooper is definitely a survival rather than combat orientated game. Fair points on the accessibility, something generally has to give when pushing the 1pp format to the edge, but hopefully the compromises are workable, including scaling and tiling print in the extreme cases.
Glad you're enjoying gameplay and aesthetics of the game!
I've played through the first 4 missions; really neat little game. I am curious about some things. Once you get the Chempill it seems like you can just move in and out of your base to remove -1<x> a bunch of times. Is that intended? Are VP used for anything other than triggering a reward for Mission 01? Is it just like a score for your run?
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying it.
Yes, that is intentional, to create a 'safe zone', where you can have certain encounters at certain probabilities, but not lose (H) due to the environment. Also you can just rest at base if you want to clear <X>'s to open them for new encounters.
Yes, other than triggering the Mission 01 reward, VP's are just to keep score for the run.
Oh! I had been playing as if I started with all three items, but they only worked once, and getting them as rewards just replenished the item. That makes mission 4 a heck of a lot easier!
Trying out your game. Great design. How does one clear a hex? I encountered some Z-Enemy in the Radwastes and deducted 1H and 1A. Is the hex now clear?
Thanks! Can see this becoming something more detailed w/ far more encounters.
Surviving an encounter doesn't clear the hex, although I can see why that might be assumed.
Hexes are "clear" before they are visited, "marked" when they have been visited, and "cleared" when you are resting at base (one per turn), erasing the "mark" and making them "clear". Trooper should only have encounters on "clear" hexes, not "marked" ones. Hope that clarifies!
Definitely agree there is room for further development. Glad you're enjoying it!
Question: Mission 4 says Destroy 3x Gunbot. There doesn't seem to be any Gunbot in Encounter.Data. Is it supposed to say Combot instead?
Yes Mission 4 is to Destroy 3x Combot. The PDF has been updated. Cheers!
Played a few missions last night, and it's pretty fun! Everything from the look to the emphasis on random encounters feels like it's a lost classic from the 1980s, but there are still very modern-feeling elements that encourage "just one more turn." Well worth four quid!
Excellent! Exactly the feels we were going for. Glad you enjoyed putting Zone Trooper through his paces, and thanks for the first review!
I’ve noticed one mistake: in the Chemzone encounter table, there’s a reference to a “Z-Bot.” I assume that’s meant to be Combot?
EDIT: Ah, never mind -- I see the new download fixes that.
